PAT Information for Parents 2024-25
Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) are administered annually to Alberta students in grade 9 and all students are expected to take part.
PATs help:
- determine if students are learning curricular outcomes
- assist schools in monitoring and improving student learning
The tests occur in January, May and June for English and Français/French language arts, math, science and social studies.

PATs are only one of many ways to evaluate student learning and are not meant to replace day-to-day teacher observations and classroom assessment. They are sources of information that must be interpreted, used and communicated within the context of regular and continuous assessment by classroom teachers.
Student Expectations for writing PATs:
As we begin planning for the Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) administration, we want to inform you of the student expectations related to the writing of the exams. All students must write PATs on their assigned date. Families wishing to apply for an exemption must submit their application to the school for an administrative decision.
To qualify for exemption, Alberta Education states a student must fall into one of the categories below:
- The student cannot respond to the assessment in its original or approved accommodated form.
- With accommodations provided participation would be harmful to the student.
If you believe your child may qualify for an exemption from the PATs, please contact the school office to discuss your child’s specific circumstances. For more information, please see this link: Gr. 9 Parent Guide
We appreciate your cooperation and support in ensuring the validity and reliability of our PATs.
Sincerely,
Jeff Chalmers
