EXPECTATIONS:

  1. Course Expectations: Math 10-3 is an apprenticeship and workplace math course.

Students require a final mark of 50% or above to enrol in Math 20-3.

  2. Attendance: ALL classes are important, whether we are doing a lesson, activity, quiz, test or review. Every missed class is a missed opportunity to learn and will result in students putting in ample amounts of their own time to catch up. Students are to tell the teacher IN ADVANCE of field trips, vacations, tournaments, etc. and then to arrange a time to meet with the teacher prior to the absence in order to stay on top of the lessons. With the exception of an illness documented by a parent, students who miss class and do not inform the teacher ahead of time will be expected to catch up on their own. For School Attendance Policy, see the Student Handbook on the Cochrane High Website.

  1. Class Time: Students are expected to be ready to start at the beginning of class, required to work until the end of class, and any remaining work is to be finished at home. Mathematics is a skill, and practice is needed to become proficient. All assignments must be completed. If finished early, the student is required to review previous material. Students will NOT be excused from class once the tardy bell has rung. This includes washroom, water breaks, and locker use. (Washroom use is discretionary.)

  2. Homework: Any work not completed in class must be done outside of class time at home or in the flex block. Students are required to complete all assignments. Assignments will be presented to the teacher at the time requested. A unit outline and deadlines are recorded on the whiteboard in the classroom.

  3. Corrections for Half Marks: Students may make corrections to any of their assignments or quizzes for half the missing marks. Corrections are due prior to the next time the homework book is taken in, and must be made next to the original question in a different colour.

  4. Missing Exams/Quizzes: Students must write all exams. Students who miss exams or quizzes will receive a mark of zero, unless the teacher has been notified by phone or voice mail prior to the exam regarding the situation. Your teacher may request a doctor’s note or certificate. Missed exams with cause will be written in the test centre the next available day. School policy is in effect for missing quizzes or exams.

  5. Late Policy: Students who are continually late for class will receive a detention, during their lunch time, to make up time missed. Students who continue to arrive late to class after successive detentions will be referred to administration.

  6. Math Help: Extra help is available during the flex blocks. Anyone achieving less than 60% is presumed to be having difficulty with the material and is expected to seek extra help. Check with your teacher to make arrangements.

  7. Progress: Every attempt is made to keep parents informed of students’ progress in this class. Progress can be regularly checked on Power School. Parents are encouraged to phone or email the teacher if they have any questions or concerns.

  8. Appeals: Students have the right to appeal a grade for any material handed in. Students may also appeal their final grade. Refer to the Student Planner for the proper procedure.

  9. Materials Required: A scientific calculator (with spare batteries) is required for Math 10-3. Pencils, pens (for grading), an eraser, a straight edge, and a protractor are also required.

  10. Food and Drinks: Students may bring a small water bottle to class. Food and other drinks are NOT permitted. Exceptions can be made under special circumstances. (Extra help at lunch, etc.)

  11. Electronic Devices: Electronic devices and cell phones (see the Student Handbook on the Cochrane High Website) are not permitted to be turned on in class. In addition to the school policy, if a student is found to have any of these items TURNED ON in class, the item will be taken from the student and returned as per school policy.

  12. Classroom Etiquette: Students are NOT permitted to wear any jackets, hats, or any other type of headgear in class. Students are expected to maintain a tidy and clean classroom for the benefit of all students and staff. At the end of each class, please pick up any paper, etc. on the floor (even if you didn’t put it there) and push the chairs into the desks. Chairs are to be stacked at the end of the last period each day. All students are to be respectful of one another and the teacher. Appropriate language and dress are also expected. Students will be given one warning. Students may be asked to leave the room and/or report to the office if unable to meet this expectation.

Parents, please send an email to your child’s teacher to confirm that you have read this course outline. We hope you have a great year at Cochrane High School.
