Level – Introductory
Prerequisite – None
Description – Students are provided with a hands-on introduction to the various

segments of communication studies: presentation and communication, photography, print and audio/video production.

General Outcomes:

  3. Students will demonstrate responsible & ethical behavior by working within

Modules:

A. Com1005–VisualComposition
a. Students learn to employ fundamental elements and principles of design

for various media and gain a strong foundational multidisciplinary experience in preparation for other Communication Technology courses

i. Pre-Skill Inventory B. Com1015–Media

a. Students discover the impact of the media and develop fundamental skills to relay a message effectively using various forms of media;
e.g., photography, print, Web, and audio or video production.

  1. Create an online flyer for a company/business

  2. Create a Children’s Story using graphic design, audio/video

    techniques

C. Com1105–Audio/Video

a. Students acquire basic production skills, including planning, recording and editing, through the production of simple audio and/or video project using basic equipment and techniques.

i. Create an Video Assignment D. Com1025-Typography

a. If there is no type on the page, it isn’t graphic design, it is fine art. Students learn about the power of typography and its uses in today’s world.

i. Complete two online Typography tutorials E. Com2105–MediaImpact

a. Students explore different media forms and examine their impact on personal, community and national interests. Using various media, students will plan, create and present a simple message.

  1. Complete two Podcast Episodes

  2. Create a new song/mash up using professional DJ software

F. Com 1145 - Animation 1

a. Students are introduced to a variety of animation techniques and produce a simple animation; the focus is on basic skills, including planning, key- framing, stage set-up, and production, used to create a moving picture.

G. Com 1055 - Web Design 1
a. Students research the characteristics of effective Web page(s) and learn

World Wide Web consortium (W3C) conventions and accessibility

concerns to construct a simple Web page. H. Com1035-GraphicTools

a. Students are introduced to the basics of computer graphics (vector and raster), and graphic computer programs.

I. Com 2025 – Electronic Layout and Publishing 1
a. Students develop skills and practical working knowledge of electronic

publishing computer hardware and software and create well-designed documents and publications using desktop publishing technology.

i. Billboard Assignment J. Com 2175 – Interactive Presentation

a. Students refine presentation skills and develop and author interactive multimedia presentations using advanced presentation software tools and techniques.

i. Advanced Video Assignment using Final Cut to Edit Video

Assessment:

*Each module may contain assignments, quizzes, tests, and workstation routine marks
*Each student begins the semester with 10% for responsibility & ethical behavior. Students may lose marks based on unsafe or negligent behavior

Materials:

  • Students are to bring writing utensil and materials to every class

  • Students are encouraged to bring their own digital camera and uploading

    cord/device to every class

  • Students are encouraged to bring a flash drive (1 GB minimum) to every class

  • Students are encouraged to bring their own CD or DVD to burn their projects on

    at the end of the semester

    Expectations:

  • There will be zero tolerance on game playing during class

  • Students are not allowed to have any food or drink in the computer lab at any

    time

  • Please read and follow the School Code of Conduct found in your student

    handbook

  • Students are to adhere to the attendance policy as listed in the student handbook

    o 4th absence = notification letter from office
    o 8th absence = letter/email from teacher outlining plan for change, potential

    meeting with guidance councilor
    o 12th absence = administration meets with student, potentially placed on

    high accountability

  • Students are expected to be on time for every class. A LATE becomes an ABSENT when a student arrives later than 30 minutes to a class

    o 3rd - 5th Late = Lunch Detention

  • Satisfactory attendance is required in ALL courses at CHS in order to fully

  • Students are to review and follow the School policy on Electronic devices and Cell Phones in the Student Handbook

• Personal Laptops will not be permitted for use in class. Hardware and Software is frequently purchased for the students use in this course.
